![]() ![]() Liquids have particles that are able to move throughout the container that the liquid is in. It is these strong bonds that give solids their definite shape and volume. Particles in a solid, as a result, vibrate in their positions. The energy that bonds these particles together is very strong and prevents the particles from moving around freely. In a solid the particles are packed tightly together. The motion and arrangement of the particles that make up a substance determines its state of matter. These particles have energy and are in a constant state of motion. When the leader calls out "gas," all move randomly away from each other.Matter is made up of very tiny particles known as atoms and molecules.When the leader calls out liquid, all separate to "handshake" distance, and briefly take and drop each other's hands.When the leader calls out "solid," all get close together.Since gas likes to move around and fill up spaces, it goes up into the balloon and inflates it.į.The soda has a gas in it (carbon dioxide).Lift the top of the balloon up and shake gently so that the candy falls into the bottle.Carefully-without spilling the candy out-put the opening of the balloon over the opening of the soda bottle.Put water into a container and place it in the refrigerator to see it freeze.Boil water and watch it turn into water vapor.Can you hold water in your hand? What else can you do with it? Pour it into different shaped containers and see if it takes those shapes. Pour water into a glass to watch it behave as a liquid.What color is it? Is there more than one color?.What shape is it? Does it have several shapes?.Identify parts of your body as solids, liquids, and gases.įind a solid object and examine it.
